Black Wellness Barriers: Understanding the Root Cause of Disease Vulnerabilities as a Pathway Towards Restoring Health

Reclaiming Wellness One Page At A Time With Dr. Tawainna Houston

Too often, conversations about Black health start at the surface: diet, exercise, and disease management, without ever naming the deeper historical, cultural, and systemic forces that shaped our vulnerabilities in the first place.

This guided experience is different.

Why This Experience Matters

So many of us have done everything right — and we’re still seeing skyrocketing rates of hypertension, diabetes, fibroids, and heart disease at younger ages.

It’s not just biology — it’s the burden of stress, the legacy of survival, and generations of unprocessed pain.

As you move through the “Read-Along” experience, you’ll not only absorb the lessons within “Black Wellness Barriers” — you’ll embody them. Each chapter is designed to help you reconnect to history, culture, calm the impact of racialized stress, and integrate practices that promote healing and balance. These benefits are more than outcomes — they’re tools for reclaiming your health story from the inside out.

This experience will help you:

Understand the Historical Roots of Modern Health Challenges

Learn how the legacy of enslavement, structural racism, and generational trauma continues to shape present-day health outcomes for African Americans. Through guided readings and reflection, you’ll connect historical truth to current wellness barriers — turning awareness into empowerment and prevention.

Reclaim Control Over Stress Responses

Understanding how chronic racial stress impacts your body helps you restore balance to your nervous system. Through guided readings and reflection, you’ll learn evidence-based tools to reduce cortisol spikes, calm your mind, and feel more in charge of your emotional health.

Restore Energy and Vitality

Discover how the science of racialized fatigue and holistic nourishment intersect. Each lesson offers practical strategies drawn from naturopathic wellness to boost circulation, improve rest, and renew your natural energy without overexertion.

Strengthen Mind-Body Awareness

As you read and listen, you’ll learn how stress patterns show up in digestion, immunity, and inflammation. You’ll gain insights into mind-body communication, empowering you to notice early signs of imbalance and apply restorative practices from both science and spirit.

Disrupt False Narratives About Black Health

Challenge the myths and misinformation that have distorted how we view Black bodies and disease for centuries. This course helps you replace internalized deficit-based beliefs with a scientifically grounded, culturally affirming understanding of strength, resilience, and possibility.

"Wellness is both remembrance and reclamation."

By joining this guided read-along, you are stepping into a healing tradition that honors history while rewriting the narrative for our future. Through knowledge, reflection, and community, we reclaim what was always ours — the right to be well, whole, and free.
